Generations X And Y - Who Are They And What Problems Wait For Them

Generations X And Y are the two generations that follow the baby boomers. While the years of the boomers are pretty clearly determined, the ranges for generations X and Y are more unclear. It is admitted that generation X starts at 1965 since that is the year in which the birthrate was about to to decline. Some put the end of generation X as early as 1976, others as late as 1982. It is practical to consider it to be around 1980 and to then define the years for generation Y as from 1981 until the end of the millennium.

While generation X is pretty small compared to the baby boomers, about one third smaller, generation Y is roughly the equal size as the boomer population at around 78 million or so. With only about 51 million people, generation X has neither the purchasing power or the potential to make an impact as the baby boomers and generation Y.

The members of generation X are comfortable with newer technology and use it willingly but those of generation Y are completely immersed in it. Even though computers in the home were increasing in numbers as generation X got older, for generation Y they were already in the vast majority of homes. As of college age, those in generation owned their own computers 97% cases.

Both generations X and Y use computer and mobile phone technologies as part of their everyday lives. Several of these two generations think the familiar home telephone, even a VOIP phone, to be quite a dinosaur. They tend to use a cellphone for all of their calls and are much more comfortable with using SMS than the baby boomer generation.

In addition, members of both generations X and Y are regular users of the different online social media sites. The may take part in special interest forums but most own a page on Face Book or My Space, if not both, and many of them communicate in the small soundbites on Twitter.

Another communality of both generations X and Y is a very dim job condition. Those in the generation X age group would in the past have expected to be well ensconced in quite secure jobs already, but rather many are facing the chance of companies downsizing and layoffs. People in generation Y are at the beginning of their entry into the workforce, but at a time when there are already too many applicants for the jobs offered. Economic experts forecast that both generations X and Y may need to accept that they will have a lower quality of life than did their parents.
